In an announcement by AFA president Claudio Tapia, Argentina is poised to meet Mexico for a friendly encounter in early June, just days before the commencement of the 2026 World Cup. This match will mark the first for Mexico’s El Tri, managed by Javier Aguirre, at the Estadio Azteca during the tournament.
Tapia also indicated that Argentina’s matches against Mexico and Honduras are part of their final preparations leading up to the World Cup. “While we still need to finalize the March date, we have confirmed the June friendlies before the World Cup, which will be against Mexico and Honduras. We’ll play them here in the United States, stadiums still to be determined,” Tapia told Ole.
As preparations unfold, no official confirmation has been given by the Mexican Football Federation regarding the matchup, but all signs point towards a finalized agreement. Notably, this friendly will take place in the U.S. and not in Mexico, though the exact host city is yet to be announced.
This encounter could set Mexico on a collision course with two of the footballing greats of our time, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, before the World Cup.
Messi has expressed uncertainty about his participation in the upcoming tournament, and there has not yet been confirmation of a friendly against Portugal. Argentina has historically outperformed Mexico, boasting a record of 16 wins, 12 draws, and 4 losses against them.
In upcoming matches, Mexico will face Colombia on Oct. 11 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, followed by a match against Ecuador just four days later at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara.
