Steven Fisk Captures First PGA Tour Title with a Late Surge at Sanderson Farms Championship
The 28-year-old American triumphed with a strong finish, securing his first title on the PGA Tour.
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Steven Fisk declared that nothing would deter him from achieving his first PGA Tour victory, achieving birdies on his final three holes to finish with an impressive 8-under 64, earning the title at the Sanderson Farms Championship.
Fisk and Garrick Higgo from South Africa found themselves in a thrilling finish at the Country Club of Jackson.
Initially tied, Fisk missed a 5-foot birdie putt at the reachable par-4 15th but quickly recovered. He sunk a remarkable 40-foot birdie putt at 16. Higgo responded with his own 12-foot birdie, making it his fourth consecutive birdie on the back nine and smiled while shushing the crowd.
Fisk then hit his approach on the 17th within 3 feet, with Higgo matching his proximity. As the competition heated up, Higgo’s birdie attempt caught the lip, allowing Fisk to secure victory with a final birdie putt from 4 feet away, clinching a two-shot lead.
“I started today with the mindset that nothing could stop me,” Fisk shared in his post-round Golf Channel interview. “I believed this victory was within reach from the start of the day; I know my capabilities.”
He concluded the tournament at 24-under 264, which will have significant benefits as he aims to solidify his status on the tour. After being ranked No. 135 in the FedEx Cup standings, he is now assured a two-year exemption through 2027.
Higgo, who started poorly with back-to-back bogeys but bounced back to tie Fisk with four consecutive birdies, commented, “I aimed to birdie every hole. Steven did the same, credit to him.”
Danny Walker tied with Vince Whaley and Rasmus Hojgaard, who made notable improvements to their FedEx Cup standings through top performances. Hojgaard’s weekend rounds propelled him from No. 87 to No. 75, while Walker and Whaley moved up to No. 86 and No. 84, respectively.
Looking ahead, Hojgaard, Whaley, and Walker will be among the players heading to Japan for the Baycurrent Classic.
