USA Displays Resilience in Draw Against Ecuador: A Competitive Spirit

The U.S. men's soccer team showcased determination during their draw with Ecuador, indicating a positive shift under new coach Mauricio Pochettino.

AUSTIN, Texas — At the conclusion of Mauricio Pochettino’s eventful first year as the head coach of the U.S. men’s national team, the team seems to be gaining momentum.

Although the USMNT did not triumph in their recent friendly against Ecuador, Africa’s second-ranked national team, the 2026 World Cup co-hosts displayed significant heart and resolve. After trailing 1-0 at half-time due to an early goal, they equalized thanks to Folarin Balogun scoring for the second match in a row.

The outcome holds less importance than the display on the field. Following a lackluster performance in their previous game—a 2-0 defeat to South Korea—this was their second consecutive match unbeaten against teams in FIFA’s Top 25. This draw came after a solid 2-0 victory over Japan in September.

Despite it not being a victory, the performance was commendable. Ecuador entered the match with an impressive defensive record, having last lost over a year ago and allowing just five goals in 18 World Cup qualifying games within a very challenging tournament in CONMEBOL.

U.S. winger Tim Weah commented, “When you’re playing against a team like Ecuador, it might not seem like a massive nation, but it is; finishing second in CONMEBOL is no small feat.”

Weston McKennie, who returned to the field for the first time since March, echoed the sentiment, stating, “I think it was a good performance from the team.”

Balogun was remarkable again, even when facing the exceptional defender Willian Pacho from PSG. The collective effort of the team was evident. Tim Ream, the U.S. captain, emphasized, “You saw the energy that we played with; that’s something that [Pochettino and his staff] have strongly emphasized.”

Pochettino has sought to induce a competitive atmosphere in a group that had reportedly become complacent. He stated, “From then, we started to work in a very intense way.”

With the players now fully invested in their mission—aiming for a successful run at the upcoming World Cup on home soil—Chris Richards remarked, “We are trying to adapt to be effective when necessary.”

As the players find their footing under Pochettino’s guidance, their confidence grows. Balogun noted, “He’s imparted many ideas and structured our play, and I feel our confidence in him is becoming evident.”

Pochettino also recognized a shift in his squad: “Facing a competitive team like Ecuador is crucial for our development, leading us to evolve. This match was serious and professional.”

This performance highlights a significant step forward for Pochettino and the team.
