Upcoming Soccer Star Rokas Pukstas Pursues USMNT Acknowledgment Amid Lithuanian Interest

Rokas Pukstas, a 21-year-old midfielder born in Oklahoma and currently playing in Croatia, expresses his desire to represent the United States national team despite interest from Lithuania.

American midfielder Rokas Pukstas transitioned to Barcelona’s academy from Sporting Kansas City in 2020. Now performing well at Croatian club Hajduk Split, there is interest from more than just U.S. Soccer. The 21-year-old is turning down approaches from Lithuania while keeping open the possibility of joining the United States in the future. Pukstas has already netted four goals in nine appearances this season.

Because of his parents’ Lithuanian heritage, the midfielder is eligible to represent Lithuania. However, he clarified, “My heart is set on representing the United States,” refusing calls from Lithuania, as reported during an interview on CBS Sports Golazo’s Morning Footy.

Pukstas expressed that he has yet to speak with the current USMNT management under Mauricio Pochettino but acknowledges his commitment to improving at Hajduk Split and contributing to their success. He has had the opportunity to learn from soccer legend Ivan Rakitic, who, while currently in a front-office role, played for Hajduk Split until recently.

Rakitic helped Pukstas develop his on-field awareness, further enhancing his skills, which Pukstas appreciates deeply.

Pukstas also takes inspiration from former teammates who are now performing at high levels for their clubs and the USMNT. “Seeing players like Diego Luna and Jack McGlynn succeed gives me confidence for my own future in U.S. soccer,” he stated.

Though Pukstas might not make this upcoming World Cup squad, he views his current opportunities to gain experience in the Croatian Football League, where his team stands at the top alongside Dinamo Zagreb, as pivotal for his career trajectory.
