Draymond Green: No Interest in Scoring on a Team Lacking Wins
Draymond Green expresses his disinterest in chasing stats on a non-competitive team as he prepares for his 14th NBA season.
Draymond Green is gearing up for his 14th NBA season with the Golden State Warriors, set to begin against the Los Angeles Lakers on October 22. As a four-time champion and a Defensive Player of the Year, Green has achieved considerable individual accolades and is expected to retire as a Hall of Famer.
Yet Green acknowledges the inevitable decline many players face later in their careers, which can prompt teams to consider younger talent. Despite any potential shifts, he is not ready to abandon Golden State nor is he interested in joining a rebuilding team.
“Could I average 20 points on a lottery team? I have no interest in doing that,” Green shared during an episode of the “Why is Draymond Green Talking About Football?” podcast. He elaborated on his thoughts about sacrificing his playing style and competitive spirit for individual statistics.
Green recognizes the pressures of changing roles within a team, particularly how he’s transitioned from a scorer to a versatile player who contributes in multiple ways. Reflecting on his past experience, he stated, “I don’t know if I have that mindset anymore,” referring to the mindset needed to score consistently, a characteristic that brought him to the NBA in the first place.
Fortunately for him, it seems likely he will finish his career with the Warriors, or at the very least, he could join another championship-caliber team should he choose to leave.
