The Miami Dolphins suffered a disheartening 31-6 defeat against the Cleveland Browns, falling to a dismal 1-6 record this season. Currently, it seems that head coach Mike McDaniel will retain his position, as indicated by reports from NFL Media, despite the team’s struggles.
Last month, Ian Rapoport revealed that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has confidence in McDaniel, showing his commitment by extending his contract through 2028. However, if the situation does not improve—particularly if fan attendance dwindles or player morale suffers—changes could be necessary.
Last weekend, the Dolphins managed just 219 total yards, failed to convert on 12 of 13 third downs, and lost the turnover battle 4-0. Tua Tagovailoa became the first quarterback since Philip Rivers in 2019 to throw three interceptions in two consecutive games.
“The way I see it, worrying about my job is disrespectful to the team. My main focus is to do my job to the fullest.” — Mike McDaniel after the Browns game.
In 2023, Miami led the NFL, averaging 401.3 total yards per game, a stark contrast to their current performance under McDaniel. Since taking over in 2022, McDaniel has a 29-29 record, highlighting that while he has made the playoffs twice, the team remains in the longest active playoff drought in the league. The Dolphins are set to face the Atlanta Falcons and their star rookie Bijan Robinson next week, underlining that the Dolphins’ struggles must be addressed before it’s too late.
