Zac Taylor Challenges Bengals Defense After Jets' Comeback Win

Cincinnati's coach expresses frustration over defensive failures in a recent game against the Jets.

While considered one of the most optimistic coaches in the NFL, Bengals coach Zac Taylor struggled to hide his disappointment after his defense failed miserably, letting the Jets rally from a 15-point deficit and secure their first victory of the 2025 season.

Leading 31-15 going into the fourth quarter, the Bengals’ defense conceded three touchdowns, including a pivotal touchdown throw from Jets running back Breece Hall, ultimately resulting in a shocking 39-38 loss. Cincinnati’s defense allowed over 500 yards to a New York team that had struggled offensively all season, ranked 27th in points scored prior to the game.

“We just needed someone to step up and make a play,” Taylor stated after the match. “Someone to hold the fort down. I just didn’t see enough of that today.”

His words carried weight as he made it clear to the defensive unit that results need to improve significantly. Shortly after, he was asked whether they had the fortitude to navigate adversity.

“I need to see someone step up and lead the group. That’s what I’m waiting for. Someone needs to take charge and get this thing back on track.”

The struggles of Cincinnati’s defense have persisted for over a year, and Sunday’s performance could be the tipping point for Taylor’s patience with this underperforming group. Last season, their defensive shortcomings caused the Bengals to miss the playoffs, wasting a stellar season from quarterback Joe Burrow and wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase. In response, Taylor dismissed well-liked defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, now with the Colts, and appointed Al Golden, formerly with Notre Dame.

Cincinnati has been active in personnel decisions, releasing former starting linebacker Germaine Pratt during the offseason and benching fellow inside linebacker Logan Wilson, who has since requested a trade.

However, these changes haven’t rectified the ongoing issues plaguing the defense. A significant part of the problem has been the reluctance to invest in defensive talent. The defense has not performed at its best since the departure of safety Jessie Bates III in free agency back in 2023, alongside multiple other defensive leaders such as Mike Hilton, Vonn Bell, D.J. Reader, and Sam Hubbard.

Their inability to adequately replace these talents through the draft has exacerbated the situation. The Bengals selected defensive backs Dax Hill and end Myles Murphy over the past two years, hoping they would eventually fill the gaps. However, both have yet to transition into quality starters. The best defensive player, Hendrickson, has been tangled in a prolonged contract dispute recently, leading to questions about whether such matters might be interfering with his leadership on defense.

With Burrow sidelined until at least mid-December, and the Bengals now at 3-5 following the loss, survival in the playoff race depends greatly on defensive improvements. “We need players to elevate their game,” Taylor insisted post-match. “I’m not going to name names. We simply need guys to step up.”
