In a stunning upset during the NWSL playoffs, NJ/NY Gotham FC triumphed over the Kansas City Current, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, with a last-minute goal in the 121st minute. Gotham will face the Orlando Pride in the semifinals next weekend.
Gotham’s victory came despite not having their star player, Esther Gonzalez, who had scored a significant portion of the team’s goals this season. The Current dominated the regular season, winning the Shield, but Gotham proved that playoffs bring unpredictable results.
Jaedyn Shaw tweeted, “Underdog my ass. We’re not underdogs.” Meanwhile, Ellie Wheeler equalized for Kansas City in stoppage time, but Gotham’s Katie Stengel sealed the game with a clutch goal near the end of extra time, reminiscent of her previous playoff performances.
The match exemplified the unpredictability of the NWSL, as both teams struggled under playoff pressure. With neither side having an advantage in expected goals, Gotham’s prowess was finally capped with Stengel’s decisive strike, sending them to the semifinals.
