NWSL Aims to Retain Trinity Rodman Amid Offers from Abroad

As the NWSL Championship approaches, the league's commissioner expresses strong intentions to keep rising star Trinity Rodman, whose contract is about to expire.

NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman stated that the league “will fight” to retain Trinity Rodman as interest grows from European clubs and the USL Super League. Rodman’s contract with the Washington Spirit, who are set to play in the NWSL Championship, will conclude at the end of this season.

The Spirit are competing to re-sign her, but three clubs from England’s Women’s Super League have shown interest, along with the USL Super League team D.C. Power, as reported by The Athletic.

Berman noted that many of these clubs can offer better salaries than the Spirit within the constraints of the NWSL’s salary cap, which will be set at $3.3 million for 2026 and will gradually increase to $5.1 million by 2030. This situation has sparked discussions about the current structure, which Berman addressed during a recent press conference.

“Our aim is to keep top players like Trinity in the NWSL, and we are committed to winning her over, especially with the championship match approaching,” Berman said.

She further emphasized that the NWSL provides more than just financial compensation. “Players evaluate a holistic picture that includes aspects like competition and coaching environment, and we believe the NWSL offers a unique market that supports women’s athletics like no other.”

If Trinity Rodman decides to leave the NWSL, she would join a growing list of USWNT players who have opted for European leagues recently, though she would be the most prominent transfer. The possible move to D.C. Power presents an intriguing scenario, as the USL Super League has been deemed a Division I league like the NWSL, yet operates on a smaller budget. Traditionally, it has served more as a developmental league rather than a destination for elite players.
