Haiti's Historic World Cup Journey: Ready to Make Their Mark

Haiti aims to showcase its talents at the World Cup 2026 after a long absence, facing major teams in their group.

WASHINGTON, D.C. –

The World Cup draw has concluded, and while the United States may be big winners, numerous teams, including Haiti, harbor hopes for the upcoming summer. This draw serves as a moment to celebrate the remarkable journeys teams have undertaken to reach the World Cup.

From new qualifiers like Haiti, to teams overcoming long World Cup absences, this moment is about reflecting on their pasts and anticipating what lies ahead.

Haiti Draws Giants, Seeks Global Recognition

Securing a spot in the World Cup is challenging, but Sebastien Migne has guided the Haitian national team to their first World Cup appearance since 1974, ending a 52-year drought. This accomplishment came despite the challenges of playing all their qualifiers as a visiting team due to safety issues in Haiti. This experience will somewhat equip them for the World Cup, especially in venues like Miami, which has a significant Haitian community.

Migne expressed pride in this achievement, noting the growth of the team amidst Haiti’s challenges: “Haiti is unfortunately going through a difficult period as a country…we focus with them on the national teams…” (Translation): Haiti faces serious challenges currently making domestic football organization difficult, thus external support and national team focus has been crucial.

Haiti is grouped with Brazil, Morocco, and Scotland, making their path to advancement tough, yet not impossible. Each match presents an opportunity for exposure and potential achievement.

New Qualifying Teams Ready to Shine

Four teams: Uzbekistan, Jordan, Curacao, and Cabo Verde will experience their first World Cup. Their immediate tasks include navigating groups that feature powerhouses like Argentina and Germany. They are now in a position to dream big.

The playoffs draw also remains critical, as 22 teams vie for the last six slots through UEFA and FIFA inter-confederation playoffs. Teams like Turkiye could rise as contenders.

Haiti’s tale is one of resilience, and as the World Cup approaches, the anticipation builds for what this remarkable team can achieve on the global stage.
