Kylian Mbappé Remains on the Bench as Real Madrid Falls to Manchester City in Champions League
In a surprising twist during a critical match, Kylian Mbappé was left on the bench while Real Madrid suffered a narrow defeat against Manchester City.
Kylian Mbappé was an unused substitute in Real Madrid’s 2-1 defeat against Manchester City during the Champions League match on Wednesday. Despite scoring 25 goals for Madrid this season, he remained on the bench due to a minor knee injury.
During the game, Mbappé was seen expressing frustration on the bench as Manchester City equalized in the first half, raising concerns about a possible foul on Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger during the corner-kick.
The match, held at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, adds pressure on coach Xabi Alonso as Madrid has now won only two of their last eight competitive fixtures, recently suffering a 2-0 home loss to Celta Vigo in La Liga.
Although nursing an ankle injury that kept him from the French national squad last month, Mbappé has shown impressive form this season, having scored seven goals over the last three games before the recent setback. He currently leads both the Champions League and La Liga scorers’ charts.
On Wednesday, Gonzalo Garcia started at the forward position for Madrid but was substituted for Arda Guler in the 58th minute. The match also saw Brahim Diaz and Endrick come on to replace Dani Ceballos and Raul Asencio, respectively.
