Notre Dame's Basketball Team Welcomes Football Player Following Markus Burton's Injury
The Fighting Irish basketball team has recruited a football player to bolster their roster after the injury to their star point guard.
Notre Dame announced this week that point guard and leading scorer Markus Burton would undergo surgery for a left ankle injury, with no timetable for his return. As conference play approaches, the Fighting Irish are seeking depth from the gridiron.
Coach Micah Shrewsberry stated on Thursday that they are adding freshman Mark Zackery IV to their roster. Zackery recently concluded his first collegiate football season as a cornerback, achieving 10 tackles and two passes defensed over 11 games. Despite choosing football, he was a standout on the basketball circuit in high school, previously winning the Indiana Class 4A state championship and being recognized as an Indiana All-Star.
“I think that Mark will be a great addition to our program,” Shrewsberry mentioned. “His experience and skills will be invaluable.”
According to the university, Zackery won the state championship and averaged impressive stats during his high school days.
The 8-3 Fighting Irish are coming off a recent 80-65 victory against Idaho and will face Evansville on Saturday.
