Historical Matthews Arena to Close After 115 Years

Matthews Arena, a venue older than several iconic Boston sports locations, is set to close this week after a storied history in sports and culture.

Matthews Arena, dating back to April 16, 1910, has been a historic venue that has served sports fans and delivered cultural milestones well before it become the modern icon it is today.

After a long tenure that witnessed games from the Boston Bruins to the Boston Celtics, the arena will close after one final match against Boston University this Saturday. The building is being replaced by a new multipurpose facility at the same site.

Northeastern Hall of Famer David Poile mentioned in an interview, “It’ll be bigger and greater. But for those of us that were lucky enough to play there, we’ll always have those memories.”

The arena has been a backdrop for not just sports but also significant political events, hosting the likes of Presidents Roosevelt, Taft, and Kennedy, as well as performers like Marvin Gaye, Bob Dylan, and Phish.

Tom Izzo, head coach of Michigan State, fondly remembered visiting the venue for a game in 2015, stating, “In those places … you dove for a loose ball on the sidelines and you’d land in the fans.”

The Huskies commemorated their time at Matthews Arena during their last basketball match with special tributes made highlighting the landmark’s rich sports history.

The closure marks the end of an era in Boston sports, as fans prepare to bid farewell to this cherished arena.
