After letting a 16-point lead slip away to the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night, the Los Angeles Rams head coach, Sean McVay, opted for a historic in-season coaching change by firing special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn, as reported by ESPN.
Blackburn’s unit has struggled, highlighted by a critical punt return touchdown in the fourth quarter that ignited Seattle’s comeback victory.

Later, the Rams missed a field goal, continuing a rough season on special teams where they rank 31st in field goal success.
Blackburn was in his third year as the Rams’ special teams coordinator after previously coaching with the Panthers and Titans.
While McVay has always stood by his staff in nine seasons, the pressure increased this year as the Rams are positioned for a championship run but faced difficulties in the special teams area.
Currently, with an 11-4 record, the Rams fell behind the Seahawks for the division lead and the crucial No. 1 seed in the NFC playoff race. The team is looking to find a suitable replacement to oversee special teams for the rest of the season.
