Kenny Minchey Joins Nebraska: Former Notre Dame Quarterback Takes Over for Dylan Raiola
Kenny Minchey, a former Notre Dame quarterback, has transferred to Nebraska to replace Dylan Raiola, aiming to help the Huskers improve their performance in the Big Ten.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers have successfully recruited a new quarterback through the NCAA transfer portal. Former Notre Dame standout Kenny Minchey is set to join Nebraska, as reported by sources to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz.
Minchey, a four-star recruit and the twelfth-ranked quarterback in the 2023 signing class, narrowly lost the starting position to C.J. Carr ahead of the 2024 season at Notre Dame, which concluded with Carr leading the Irish to a strong 10-2 record.
Despite not winning the starting job, Minchey’s performance was unexpectedly close to Carr’s. After the announcement, one insider suggested that the decision could have gone either way. “I think it was 50-50 where some expected one player and some the other,” the source commented.
Minchey’s consistency began to impress the coaching staff, while Carr had moments of great play but occasionally struggled with ball security. Minchey’s ability to stand out may bode well for Nebraska, as he only had limited game exposure at Notre Dame, completing 20 of 26 passes for 196 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. He also managed to score once on the ground with 84 rushing yards.
Upon arriving in Lincoln, Minchey is expected to help the Cornhuskers move past two consecutive 7-6 seasons under coach Matt Rhule as the program aims for a more competitive standing in the Big Ten. Minchey will be taking over the reins from Raiola, a former five-star recruit who did not meet expectations during his time at Nebraska. Raiola’s decision to enter the transfer portal came after his brother Dayton decommitted from Nebraska last November. Head coach Rhule also made coaching changes by parting ways with Donovan Raiola, Dylan’s uncle and offensive line coach, after the season.
