FIFA Men's Rankings: USA and Mexico Drop; Spain and Argentina Maintain Positions

The latest FIFA rankings reflect the impact of the AFCON, showcasing Senegal's rise and the decline of the USA and Mexico.

The January 2026 FIFA World Ranking has seen notable changes due to the conclusion of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Senegal made a significant leap, jumping seven spots to 12th place, directly impacting the USA and Mexico’s standings as they fell to 15th and 16th, respectively.

AFCON impacts CONCACAF rankings

Senegal emerged as the standout performer, rising seven rankings after a strong AFCON showing. This shift adversely affected traditional CONCACAF powerhouses, USA and Mexico, who saw their rankings decline.

Canada also slip

Canada, as the third-highest-ranked team in CONCACAF, dropped two places as Nigeria climbed to 26th and Algeria advanced to 28th.

What comes next for the USA?

The USA will not see action again until March, with friendly matches against Belgium and Portugal scheduled for later that month.

What comes next for Mexico?

Mexico has a series of preparation matches under head coach Javier Aguirre, facing Panama, then traveling to Bolivia and hosting Iceland in Querétaro as they finalize their squad ahead of the World Cup.
