One of the USA’s promising young soccer stars is reportedly heading to Spain. U.S. men’s national team right-back Alex Freeman is on the verge of transferring to Villarreal from Orlando City in MLS, as reported by The Athletic. The move may involve a fee exceeding $7 million, alongside a potential sell-on clause for Orlando.
The 21-year-old defender has gained recognition as a standout talent within the MLS, earning an All-Star selection in 2025 and being named the league’s Young Player of the Year. He scored six goals, making him one of the top-scoring defenders in the league.
Alex is the son of former NFL great Antonio Freeman, and he has represented the USA 11 times, contributing to the squad that reached the Gold Cup final in 2025.
He has become a key player for USA manager Mauricio Pochettino, with Doug McIntyre projecting him to be included in the 26-man roster for the USA at the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, where he may start as part of the defense.
In a recent match against Uruguay, Alex showcased his skills by scoring two goals during a 5-1 friendly victory. He expressed, “I need to be in the best form for the World Cup. I’m comfortable in Orlando. I know I’ll be able to play my game there. If something happens, maybe I move. But the World Cup is coming. I need to be ready for the most important time in my life.”
Alex’s skills caught the attention of many, particularly when he outplayed Ronald Araujo, a top defender in global soccer.
The young star is set to show his potential with Villarreal, who are currently striving to secure a spot in the Champions League for the upcoming season, currently positioned fourth in the La Liga standings behind Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atlético Madrid.
