The San Francisco Giants have secured a one-year deal with free-agent infielder Luis Arraez. Reports indicate that Arraez will earn approximately $12 million and will take on the second base position. According to ESPN, Arraez, aged 28, is a three-time All-Star and has been awarded the Batting Title. In the last three seasons, he maintained a batting average of .319/.355/.416 with an OPS+ of 111, including seven home runs and eight stolen bases on average. Last year, his statistics showed a batting line of .292/.327/.392 (99 OPS+), featuring a career-low strikeout rate of 3.1%.
“Arraez is a unidimensional player. He doesn’t walk or run often and he can’t field or slug. He’s a pure singles merchant who excels at connecting with pitches, achieving an impressive near 95% contact rate. This remarkable skill has become less advantageous in today’s game, but it only requires one team to recognize his unique talent for him to secure a more lucrative deal than expected.”
Arraez joins the Giants after a season where the team ended with a record of 81-81, distributing at least 40 second-base appearances among players like Tyler Fitzgerald, Casey Schmitt, and Christian Koss. Collectively, their performances at second base resulted in a batting average of .217/.273/.343 with just 14 home runs.
