Mariners Acquire Brendan Donovan from Cardinals in Major Trade Deal

Seattle Mariners have traded for All-Star infielder/outfielder Brendan Donovan from the St. Louis Cardinals in a significant three-team deal.

The Seattle Mariners are set to acquire All-Star infielder/outfielder Brendan Donovan from the St. Louis Cardinals in a noteworthy three-team swap involving the Tampa Bay Rays, according to an ESPN report. The trade will see switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje returning to St. Louis and the Rays receiving third baseman Ben Williamson from Seattle. In addition, the Cardinals will gain 2023 first-round draft selection Tai Peete, outfielder Colton Ledbetter, and a compensatory draft pick.

Trade Breakdown:

  • Mariners receive: UTL Brendan Donovan
  • Rays receive: 3B Ben Williamson
  • Cardinals receive: SHP Jurrangelo Cijntje, OF Tai Peete, OF Colton Ledbetter, two compensatory draft picks

Brendan Donovan, now entering his 29th season in 2026, just completed his first All-Star season. While his primary position is second base, he also handles first, third, and left field, and can occasionally cover shortstop. Last season, he achieved an OPS+ of 119, aligning closely with his career average of 117 over four major league seasons. He hopes to return to form after grappling with a toe injury that impacted his performance.

Additionally, Donovan’s contract keeps him off the free-agent market until after the 2027 season.

From the Cardinals’ perspective, this trade signifies their commitment to a thorough rebuild led by president Chaim Bloom. The off-season has seen them parting ways with key players like Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras, and Nolan Arenado, while gathering promising young talents to rejuvenate their system. The recent acquisition of Donovan helps pave the way for top prospect JJ Wetherholt.

Cijntje, a former first-round pick, is recognized for his potent pitching skills and is viewed as a valuable addition to the Cardinals. Peete had a stay in High A during 2025, previewing a promising yet challenging path ahead.
