Keion White, a defensive lineman for the San Francisco 49ers, was shot in the ankle following a verbal dispute that escalated at a Super Bowl event in San Francisco early Monday morning. After the shooting, the team confirmed that he underwent surgery later that day.
`“Keion White was a victim of a shooting and sustained a bullet wound to his ankle this morning in San Francisco,” the team’s statement outlined, as reported by Matt Barrows of The Athletic.
He is expected to recover and is not facing life-threatening injuries, according to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner. The incident took place around 4 a.m. on Mission Street, a well-known area in San Francisco, as detailed by police reports.
Authorities revealed that a preliminary investigation showed that a confrontation between two groups inside a business resulted in shots being fired, with White being an unintended victim.
Further, investigators do not believe White was involved in the altercation that led to his injury.
The backdrop for these events was the Bay Area’s hosting of Super Bowl 60, which occurred Sunday, where the Seattle Seahawks triumphed over the New England Patriots with a score of 29-13.
At 27 years old, White previously played for the Patriots before being traded to the 49ers mid-season. He was seen attending the Super Bowl clad in Patriots gear, as showcased on his Instagram. Over the course of the season, he recorded 18 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 14 games.
