NBA Penalties: Jazz Hit with $500K Fine, Pacers to Pay $100K for Roster Decisions

The NBA has fined both the Utah Jazz and Indiana Pacers over management decisions that compromised the competitive integrity of the league.

The NBA has issued fines to the Utah Jazz of $500,000 and the Indiana Pacers of $100,000 for questionable roster management practices.

The Jazz’s hefty fine marks one of the largest penalties in NBA history, attributed to their handling of key players, Lauri Markkanen and Jaren Jackson Jr. In recent matchups against the Orlando Magic and the Miami Heat, both players were benched before the fourth quarter despite leading in the score.

Meanwhile, the Pacers incurred penalties for breaching the Player Participation Policy in a game held on February 3. Investigations indicated that star forward Pascal Siakam could have played under the policy’s medical guidelines. The NBA emphasized the importance of prioritizing competitive play over draft positioning.

“Such actions that favor draft position over winning diminish the integrity of NBA competitions. We will address any further misconduct decisively,” stated NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.

As of Thursday, the struggling Jazz (18-37) are positioned third from the bottom in the West, while the Pacers (15-40) sit similarly in the East, both now heading toward the draft lottery.
