The USA women’s hockey team has turned down an invitation to attend the State of the Union address, stemming from conflicts in their schedules. This decision followed a playful remark from President Donald Trump to the men’s hockey team, suggesting he would be in trouble if he failed to invite the women’s team as well.
A spokesperson from USA Hockey expressed gratitude for the invitation, emphasizing their appreciation for the acknowledgment of their remarkable achievement in winning gold at the Winter Olympics. The spokesperson stated, “Due to the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments following the Games, the athletes are unable to participate.”
In the midst of this situation, Trump had formally invited the men’s team to the event, which had resulted from their victory over Canada. Despite the invitation, it’s uncertain whether the men’s team will attend the State of the Union.
Trump remarked humorously, “I must tell you, we’re gonna have to bring the women’s team. I do believe I probably would be impeached.”
Team USA, during the 2026 Olympics, made a historic achievement by securing hockey gold medals for both the men’s and women’s teams. The women triumphed over Canada in a thrilling 2-1 overtime match, marking their first gold in eight years. Just two days later, the men’s team also clinched their gold by defeating Canada with a similar score in overtime, their first title since the legendary 1980 ‘Miracle on Ice.’
The decisive goal for the women was scored by Megan Keller, who played a pivotal role in the team’s success.
