The United States men’s national team is gearing up for its debut in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place in 100 days. With the starting striker position still up for grabs, a hot debate is unfolding between Folarin Balogun and Ricardo Pepi, as both players keep netting goals every week.
Brian McBride, an iconic figure in USA Soccer, has made his preference clear. “I would start Flo, especially with the way that he’s been playing this year,” he expressed on Alexi Lalas’ show, State of the Union.
Translation: McBride believes Balogun’s current form merits him a starting role.
Balogun has enjoyed a remarkable season with AS Monaco, where he has tallied 12 goals and four assists across all competitions, including five goals in the UEFA Champions League. Until this season, he hadn’t surpassed the 10-goal mark since 2022-23 when he ranked among the top scorers in Ligue 1.

Following a 12-month absence from international duty due to injuries, Balogun has now made his mark for the national team, scoring three goals in his last five matches since his return.
Ricardo Pepi remains a strong contender, renowned for his scoring prowess and movement on the pitch. “Pepi is a great goalscorer and his movement is really good,” remarked McBride. The pressure on Pepi is palpable as Balogun’s rise looms right behind him.
Following a stellar season with PSV, Pepi is anticipated for a potential transfer to the Premier League. Fulham made a $38 million bid for him during the last transfer window, but the deal failed due to timing issues concerning a replacement striker.
Translation: Pepi’s future might lie at Fulham as a likely addition.
Both Balogun and Pepi are expected to feature in upcoming friendly matches against Belgium and Portugal, crucial preparations before Coach Pochettino finalizes his World Cup roster in May.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will commence on June 11.
