Understanding Iran's Possible Withdrawal from the 2026 World Cup
Insights into Iran's uncertain participation in the 2026 World Cup due to ongoing conflict, alongside FIFA's options and responses.
Iran’s participation in the upcoming World Cup is uncertain due to the ongoing conflict in the region. Ahmad Donyamali, Iran’s Minister of Sport and Youth, stated, “Under no circumstances can we participate in the World Cup” due to the war that has raised serious concerns about security for the national team.
Donyamali commented on state television regarding the safety of their athletes amidst mentions of military operations that began on February 28. He declared, “This corrupt regime has assassinated our leader, and our children are not safe; therefore, we certainly cannot have such a presence.”
FIFA has not confirmed Iran’s withdrawal but acknowledges the challenges posed by the current situation. The governing body also explained the potential options available, such as inviting another team to fill Iran’s slot or reducing Group G to three teams, which could complicate the playoff dynamics.
What has been communicated thus far?
Following Donyamali’s announcement, FIFA refrained from commenting. However, there was mention of a discussion between FIFA president Gianni Infantino and U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the Iranian team’s participation in the World Cup.
