Matt Crocker has vacated his role as the sporting director of U.S. Soccer, just a few months before the highly anticipated World Cup. His resignation comes during a tumultuous time for the federation’s management, crucial for both the men’s and women’s national teams.
Crocker, originally from Wales, was appointed by U.S. Soccer in 2023 to oversee all national teams. He is reportedly heading to a similar position with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation.
“Over the past several years, U.S. Soccer has expanded greatly across every aspect of our sports organization, and we thank Matt for his contributions to that growth,” said JT Batson, the CEO and Secretary General of U.S. Soccer, in a statement on Tuesday. “Matt played a key role in guiding significant changes within our organization, and we appreciate his efforts. We are confident in our direction and leadership going forward.”
U.S. Soccer’s Strategic Direction As Crocker exits, there remain many strategic questions. With Pochettino’s coaching contract up after the World Cup, the federation swiftly needs to appoint a successor—especially regarding future preparations for the 2030 tournament.
Crocker was crucial in the recruitment of several prominent coaches, including Gregg Berhalter and Emma Hayes, significantly affecting the organization’s structure and strategy for youth development.
Following his departure, Dan Helfrich, the Chief Operating Officer of U.S. Soccer, will oversee the sporting department. He will collaborate closely with Oguchi Onyewu and Tracey Kevins to manage Crocker’s former duties.
Crocker’s influence in U.S. Soccer has seen both significant hiring changes and organizational strategies, such as the U.S. Way, which supports youth development initiatives.
