Key Players for the USWNT at the SheBelieves Cup: Macario's Comeback and Emerging Defenders

An overview of which players to keep an eye on as the US Women’s National Team prepares for the SheBelieves Cup.

The U.S. women’s national team is gearing up for the 2025 SheBelieves Cup starting with Colombia. Coach Emma Hayes has summoned 23 players for this round-robin tournament, aiming to assess the player pool effectively. This tournament provides a key opportunity to observe which players shine against different competitors.

Players to Watch

Catalina Macario

The Chelsea FC forward has overcome her ACL injury and is back on the field. With two goals and two assists this season in the Super League, she has 16 chances created, showcasing her as a significant asset for the national team.

“With no Sophia Smith, there’s a shortage of less developed players coming through, but Cat can fill that forward role,” said Hayes.

Jenna Nighswonger

Now with Arsenal, Nighswonger is recognized for her adaptability between midfield and defense. Her recent transition from NJ/NY Gotham FC has allowed her to showcase her versatility.

“She is a student of the game, adaptable, and can play higher up the pitch,” Hayes commented.

Gisele Thompson

The young prospect is being evaluated closely due to her potential to strengthen the USWNT’s defense. Coming from Futures Camp, she will be crucial in determining the team’s depth going into internationally competitive scenarios.

“We need to develop more fullbacks, and Gisele is a promising talent in that area,” said Hayes, emphasizing the importance of versatility.

Overall, this training ground for the USWNT is crucial as they build their roster for the future competitions.
