Kawhi Leonard is stepping away from the LA Clippers indefinitely to help family members evacuate due to the ongoing wildfires in the greater Los Angeles area, confirmed head coach Tyronn Lue on Wednesday.
“You definitely have to take care of home. … Totally had my support 100%,” Lue stated. Translation: ‘You must prioritize family above everything else. I fully support him.’
The Clippers are currently on a road trip that began in Minnesota and concludes in Denver. Their next home game is set for Saturday at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, part of Los Angeles County.
Furthermore, the NHL has postponed the Los Angeles Kings’ home game against the Calgary Flames at Crypto.com Arena due to the wildfires’ proximity. Notably, the Los Angeles Lakers share this stadium and are slated to compete against the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday.
Lakers head coach JJ Redick also faced evacuation with his family, as did Steve Kerr’s elderly mother.
Leonard, born and raised in LA, made his season debut during the Clippers’ victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday, where he played for 19 minutes and scored 12 points.
