Yankees Pitcher Luis Gil's Shutdown Due to Shoulder Strain; MRI Scheduled

Luis Gil is sidelined with shoulder tightness, raising questions about his availability for the season opener.

Yankees starting pitcher Luis Gil has been shut down during his scheduled bullpen session on Friday due to tightness in his right shoulder and will have an MRI on Saturday. There’s a possibility that the MRI results could reveal a minor issue or something more serious impacting his availability for the entire 2025 season.

As the season approaches in under four weeks, Gil’s spot in the rotation is now in jeopardy. Marcus Stroman is prepared to step in if needed. This shutdown comes as additional concerns arise with other pitchers like JT Brubaker (fractured ribs), Jake Cousins (strained forearm), and Scott Effross (hamstring injury) affecting the Yankees’ pitching depth. If Stroman takes Gil’s place, it will be behind Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, and Clarke Schmidt.

Gil, 26, was the AL Rookie of the Year in 2024 after an impressive 15-7 record with a 3.50 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 171 strikeouts in 151⅔ innings.
