UC San Diego's Journey: From Division II to NCAA Tournament Contenders
Follow the inspiring story of UC San Diego, now in its first year of eligibility for the NCAA Tournament, as it aims to make a significant impact after transitioning from Division II.
When you think of Hawai’i, you envision idyllic beaches, gorgeous oceans, and rich flora. In 1888, a magazine called Paradise of the Pacific introduced the world to these eight islands. But when Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones reached the University of Hawai’i at Hilo in 2020, he encountered a less-than-paradisiacal element—Hilo is the rainiest city in the United States. Tait-Jones, who moved from New Zealand, faced challenges without a car.
“I was getting stuck in the rain biking to the gym,” Tait-Jones laughs, recalling how he’d stay at the gym during downpours.
An accomplished youth rugby and soccer player, Tait-Jones didn’t embrace basketball until age twelve when his dad, Aaron, introduced him to the sport. Nonetheless, those rec-league players never had a chance, leading his hobby to become a passion. After immense effort and a strong support system, Tait-Jones evolved into a college basketball player.
“What was once a hobby became a passion; it’s a magical journey,” he reflects.
Now, the 26-4 UC San Diego Tritons are ready to make waves as they aim for their inaugural NCAA postseason berth. They are on a remarkable 11-game winning streak, positioning them among the top contenders in the Big West Conference.
In early February, they notched a significant victory against UC Irvine, securing a tie for the league lead.
As the season progresses, the Tritons prove to be no Cinderella story, but rather a powerhouse in NCAA Division I basketball. Their unique journey from Division II to Division I basketball has been marked by determination and skill, and they are poised to leave a significant mark on March Madness.
