Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery Ejected from Big Ten Tournament Amid Dispute with Officials

In a tense moment during the Big Ten Tournament, Iowa's coach Fran McCaffery faced ejection after two quick technical fouls for arguing with officials.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery received two technical fouls in the span of 15 seconds and was ejected from Thursday’s Big Ten Tournament game vs. Illinois with 13:33 remaining in the second half.

The first technical foul came in response to McCaffery arguing with an official while Iowa was setting up on offense. After play was stopped, he was assessed another technical 15 seconds later for allegedly saying “that’s f—ing bullshit” to the official who penalized him.

At the time of the incident, the game was 69-60, with Illinois going on to score all four technical free throws to extend the lead to 73-60.

By McCaffery standards, this quick ejection was unusual, but it occurred at a critical moment that may have cost the Hawkeyes their momentum and ultimately their season.

The incident might mark McCaffery’s final outburst as the head coach of Iowa, as the team is unlikely to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row, with his job security appearing increasingly tenuous after consecutive seasons below .500 in Big Ten play.
