Referee Manages to Include Liberty's Sub in Historic NCAA Tournament Game

Liberty's JC Shirer Jr. gets a memorable chance to play thanks to an attentive referee, Roger Ayers.

Playing in an NCAA Tournament game is a unique experience not many basketball players get to enjoy, and on Friday in Seattle, Liberty guard JC Shirer Jr. got that opportunity thanks to an observant referee.

As the clock neared one minute to go and with Oregon leading 78-46, referee Roger Ayers noticed Shirer—the last Liberty player yet to enter the game—at the scorer’s table as he was coming up the floor. Recognizing that there might not be another stoppage to let Shirer in, Ayers stopped play to clean a phantom wet spot on the floor, allowing Shirer Jr. to check in and seize his March Madness moment.

This may seem like a minor moment, but players like Shirer Jr. work diligently behind the scenes, contributing to their team’s journey to the Big Dance. This gesture from Ayers ensured that Shirer got to participate in this significant NCAA experience.
