The dust has settled on another international break for the United States men’s national team, and it couldn’t have come with more disappointment than losing to Panama and Canada while only scoring a goal. With the World Cup looming, the list of questions for Mauricio Pochettino and the USMNT is growing, but most of them center around one thing: how good is the depth around this team?
Things could’ve been different with Folarin Balogun, Sergino Dest, and Antonee Robinson in the squad, but the USMNT has entered most major tournaments with at least one core player injured. Not enough members of the 12-18 range on the roster have shown that they can be suitable replacements. It’s highlighted when talented players like Gio Reyna can’t get playing time for their squads, further harming depth.
However, some players showed promise during this camp. Next up are friendlies against Türkiye and Switzerland, but Pochettino may not have his full roster due to the Club World Cup participation of Juventus and Borussia Dortmund.
Stock Up: Diego Luna
With Gio Reyna struggling for playing time, Diego Luna brought a spark to midfield. He made his chances count with an assist against Canada and displayed audacious passes that others may not attempt. As long as he’s healthy, he should definitely be on the Gold Cup roster.
Stock Down: Weston McKennie
It wasn’t a great window for McKennie. Though his defensive challenges were adequate, he didn’t do enough with the ball. Competing teams were more compact against the USMNT midfield than usual, which affected McKennie’s performances.
Stock Up: Chris Richards and Tim Ream in Defense
They are establishing themselves as the top pairing for the USMNT defense, although concerns arise from the age and injuries of the players.
Stock Down: Christian Pulisic
During this Nations League window, Pulisic had one of his worst performances in a USMNT shirt. His ability to perform at the highest level is crucial for the team moving forward.
Stock Up: Patrick Agyemang
Demonstrating a strong presence, Agyemang is now firmly in the forward pool for the USMNT, scoring three goals in four caps.
