Golf Legend Dave Pelz Passes Away at 85, Tributes from Phil Mickelson and Patrick Reed

Dave Pelz, an iconic figure in golf coaching, known for his work with golfers like Phil Mickelson and Patrick Reed, has died at the age of 85.

Legendary golf coach Dave Pelz passed away on Sunday at the age of 85. Pelz, a former research scientist at NASA, was renowned for his innovative contributions to golfers’ short games and putting techniques. He not only tested and created various methods but also developed training aids that transformed how the game is played.

Pelz authored several popular books and established the Dave Pelz Scoring Game School, working with top players including Phil Mickelson and Patrick Reed.

As news of Pelz’s death spread, many of his former students shared heartfelt tributes. Mickelson, arguably Pelz’s most well-known disciple, stated:

“I have so many things to say about this incredible man. I owe so much of my success to the many things he taught me, and he lives on as I share those same insights to numerous other golfers.”

Pelz’s website has compiled many tributes from across the golf community, including a poignant tribute from Patrick Reed reflecting on how Pelz transformed his golf journey:

“10 years ago, I was 24 years old and asked Dave Pelz if he would work with me. He became so much more than just a coach to Justine and me. He taught me how to think and brought so much life to my game.”

Steve Elkington, 1995 PGA Champion, also shared his condolences, highlighting Pelz’s impact:

“We lost one of golfing’s giants today. Dave will be remembered for his groundbreaking contributions to golf.”

Pelz’s legacy will undoubtedly endure, with numerous golfers and fans remembering his innovations and contributions to the sport.
