Anticipating an 18-Game Schedule in the NFL: What to Know

The NFL aims to shift to an 18-game regular season as early as 2027, significantly impacting team international schedules and bye weeks.

The NFL is considering extending its regular-season schedule from the current 17 games to 18 as early as the 2027 season. This transition will not only influence the number of games each team plays but also affect the international slate of games and bye weeks.

In an interview, NFL insider Jonathan Jones explained the complexities surrounding this potential change. Despite the league’s desire for an 18-game season, numerous factors must be addressed, especially concerning negotiations with the players’ association.

“We are very far away from 18 games. The NFL owners want 18 games, but there are a lot of things they have to work out. They have to work it out with the players association, the union. This has to be collectively bargained.”

This proposed change could bring about significant adjustments, such as ensuring every team plays at least one game internationally each season. It is projected that there will be 16 international matches in the revamped schedule.

The NFL’s intention to expand its schedule is historic; following past expansions from 14 to 16 games in 1978 and from 16 to 17 games in 2021, a further increase to 18 games would represent a major shift in league operations.

While the NFL and its owners have expressed interest, an official 18-game schedule may be a few years away, pending extensive discussions and agreements before the 2027 season.
