Trey Lance is on the move again, signing with the Los Angeles Chargers. After being drafted third overall, Lance has now spent time with both the 49ers and the Cowboys. His new contract is worth one year and $6.2 million. In his role, he’ll serve as the backup to Justin Herbert, a fellow first-round pick entering his sixth season.
Lance’s previous tenure with the 49ers saw him start only four times due to injuries and the emergence of Brock Purdy, who took over as the starting quarterback. After transferring to the Cowboys, he played minimally in 2023. Now, as he steps into a new opportunity with the Chargers, he aims to prove himself alongside the established quarterback Herbert.
Despite limited regular-season play, Lance has participated actively in preseason games, showing promise. “Trying to get as much as I can with him,” stated then-Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy about Lance’s development needs.
The Chargers’ QB roster includes veteran Taylor Heinicke as well, adding competition. Lance’s prior experiences with the 49ers and Cowboys lay the groundwork for what he hopes will be a successful tenure in Los Angeles.
