Jaylen Wells Expected to Sit Out the Season After Serious Injury Following a Dunk Attempt

Grizzlies rookie Jaylen Wells faces an extended absence due to an injury sustained during a game, raising concerns for his future.

Memphis Grizzlies standout rookie Jaylen Wells will likely miss the rest of the season, the team announced Friday. Wells suffered a broken right wrist, concussion, and facial laceration after a scary fall during a dunk attempt on Tuesday. He is expected to make a full recovery.

The injury occurred in the second quarter of the Grizzlies’ game against the Hornets. Wells caught a pass ahead of the defense and successfully finished a dunk, but while grabbing the rim, he was undercut by KJ Simpson. As a result, Wells lost his grip on the rim and fell hard, landing directly on his head.

Jaylen Wells falls hard on his front of his head after the And-One dunk. The medical staff rush for his help and then evacuate him. Upon referee review, the foul by KJ Simpson was upgraded to a flagrant penalty 2 and he was ejected from the game.

For his part, Simpson was assessed a flagrant 2 foul, resulting in an automatic ejection.

Wells has emerged as a promising player since being drafted at 39th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft and had been in Rookie of the Year discussions all season long. Before his injury, he had started in the previous 74 games for the Grizzlies, who are currently fighting for a postseason spot in the Western Conference. He rejoined his teammates for shootaround on Thursday ahead of the game against the Timberwolves.

In Simpson’s defense, it appears the foul was unintentional, as he attempted to make a chase-down block but lost his footing at the last moment, resulting in a dangerous play.

The Grizzlies, sitting at the No. 7 position in the Western Conference standings, are competing for playoff positioning against teams like the Warriors, Clippers, and Nuggets. Their next matchup will be against the Nuggets on Friday night.
