2025 NBA Play-In Tournament Recap: Warriors and Magic Secure Playoff Spots

A recap of the first day of the 2025 NBA Play-In Tournament, featuring the Golden State Warriors and Orlando Magic's victories.

The 2025 NBA Play-In Tournament commenced Tuesday, with both No. 7 seeds progressing, yet the outcomes were unexpected, especially in the Western Conference, where the Golden State Warriors narrowly defeated the Memphis Grizzlies.

Highlights from Day 1 of the Play-In Tournament

Jimmy Butler and Stephen Curry shared an embrace, showcasing teamwork in high-stakes situations.

“I know I want to win a championship so he needs, his what, this would be No. 5?” - Butler spoke of his championship ambitions.

Butler recorded 38 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, while Curry netted 37 points, leading the Warriors to secure the seventh seed in the Western Conference with a 121-116 win over the Grizzlies.

Curry’s clutch shots helped seal the victory, including a pair of free throws in the closing seconds.

The Warriors advance to a best-of-seven series against the Houston Rockets starting Sunday in Houston.

Coach Steve Kerr expressed confidence: “It took 83 games but we’re right where we want to be, which is back in the playoffs and we’ve got a chance.”

Memphis Grizzlies’ Performance

For the Grizzlies, Desmond Bane scored 30 points and Ja Morant added 22, yet they fell short of advancing. A miscue by Santi Aldama during a crucial inbound led to a violation, sealing their fate.

In the Eastern Conference, Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner faced challenges, leading the Orlando Magic to a 120-95 victory over the Atlanta Hawks, despite struggles in securing points early in the game. Cole Anthony emerged as a key player for the Magic, scoring 26 points.

The Magic’s defense was a decisive factor, limiting Atlanta’s shooting percentage and forcing Trae Young into foul trouble, culminating in his ejection for unsportsmanlike behavior.

With both teams securing playoff spots, the excitement of the 2025 NBA Playoffs is set to unfold.
