Tyron Smith Announces Retirement, Bids Farewell to Teammate Dak Prescott

Smith acknowledges the bond with Prescott, calling him a lifelong friend and an essential teammate.

FRISCO, Texas – Football is distinct from sports like basketball and baseball as it emphasizes a team-oriented approach to success.

That’s why eight-time Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith took the time to express his gratitude to an extensive list of teammates during his retirement press conference on Wednesday. He notably thanked key Dallas teammates:

  • Tight end Jason Witten
  • Quarterback Tony Romo
  • Hall of Fame edge rusher DeMarcus Ware
  • Wide receiver Dez Bryant
  • Offensive tackle Doug Free
  • Wide receiver Miles Austin
  • Linebacker Sean Lee
  • Right guard Zack Martin
  • Center Travis Frederick
  • Left guard Ronald Leary
  • Offensive lineman La’el Collins
  • Left guard Tyler Smith
  • Running back Ezekiel Elliott
  • Running back Tony Pollard
  • Running back Darren McFadden
  • Running back DeMarco Murray

Despite this recognition, it was current Cowboys starting quarterback Dak Prescott who received the most praise from Smith. Prescott, a three-time Pro Bowler, played as Smith’s quarterback for eight of his 13 seasons in Dallas. Smith describes Prescott as “one of the best teammates” he ever had.

“Dak cares deeply about everyone in the locker room, and he’s more than a teammate. He’s a lifelong friend. And I’ll always have your back. You’ll always be QB1 to me,” Smith expressed while emphasizing the strength of their friendship and partnership.

In a follow-up discussion, Smith elaborated on the depth of his relationship with Prescott. Their shared journey includes five playoff appearances and three consecutive 12-win seasons from 2021 to 2023.

“Over the years we’ve built a strong relationship, and as friends and teammates, we accomplished a lot. We made the game enjoyable and didn’t allow it to be difficult. We just went out there to play and have fun,” Smith shared, highlighting the joy they derived from their game.

Cowboys fans often argue about their favorite quarterback in the 21st century between Romo and Prescott. For Smith, having shielded Prescott for three more seasons, his allegiance is unambiguous.
