It happened – Shedeur Sanders fell in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. During the pre-draft process, I couldn’t recall a more enigmatic, polarizing, yet predominantly perceived-to-be top quarterback prospect than Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders.
Some draft analysts liked him while many firmly believed he should be selected later in the first round of the draft.
After a commendable but not dominant two years at Colorado, Sanders was almost unheard of post-season. There were no appearances at the East-West Shrine Bowl or workouts at the NFL Scouting Combine; just one obligatory press conference in Indianapolis.
As draft night approached, three teams had notable quarterback needs: the Titans, Giants, and Steelers. Other teams needing quarterback changes in the long term included the Jets and Saints who might secretly plan to upgrade their quarterback situation earlier than expected.
Historically, quarterback prospects tend to be drafted sooner than players in other positions, even if they show significant flaws. On average, over the past decade, the first three quarterbacks were drafted at pick No. 12. This suggests that Sanders’ decline was indeed surprising; even the Steelers, who had pick No. 21 and seemed like a strong candidate for Sanders, opted for Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon, indicating another red flag.
The evolution of Sanders as a quarterback raises questions. Despite entering his rookie season at 6-foot-1 and 212 pounds, he struggled with short-area speed which could lead to injuries over time. Pressure stats weren’t on his side either, indicating a rough start in the NFL.
Potential teams for Sanders:
- Los Angeles Rams: Their first-round pick at No. 26 would suit him well; he could learn behind Matthew Stafford.
- Cleveland Browns: Their second pick at No. 33 might serve Sanders for development given Kevin Stefanski’s guidance.
- New York Giants: With a rich offensive framework and their second pick at No. 34, he could thrive under Brian Daboll.
- New Orleans Saints: The potential need for a quarterback could make the Saints a landing spot for Sanders, given Kellen Moore’s diverse quarterback skills and the existing talent in New Orleans.
