Kevin De Bruyne is becoming a prime target for the Chicago Fire as he nears the end of his contract with Manchester City. With the Belgian midfielder expected to depart City by the conclusion of this season, rumors indicate he may join head coach Gregg Berhalter’s team.
The Fire, one of the most rapidly improving teams in Major League Soccer, have shown considerable interest in strengthening their squad following prior links to Neymar.
De Bruyne confirmed in April that he intends to leave City, following a successful tenure at the club. He has been regarded as a crucial player and would be a valuable asset for any team post-season.
Although initial rumors had him linked to San Diego FC, his rights have now shifted to Inter Miami. The latter’s situation of having several designated players complicates their ability to recruit him. This opens a crucial negotiation phase for the Fire, who are prioritizing De Bruyne’s potential signing, with D.C. United and New York City FC also expressing interest.
However, there is uncertainty as Saudi teams are reportedly vying for his signature, and he might consider returning to another Premier League club.
While the Chicago Fire currently sit in 11th place in the Eastern Conference, they are close to a playoff spot. With star striker Hugo Cuypers leading the MLS Golden Boot rankings, adding De Bruyne could propel the Fire into serious contention for the MLS Cup.
