Redemption isn’t in the cards for Devin Haney as he faces Jose Ramirez in a welterweight bout this Friday at Times Square, New York (6 p.m. ET, DAZN PPV Buy Now). However, a win could pave the way for his comeback.
The upcoming match marks Haney’s first encounter since his battle with Ryan Garcia in April 2024, where Haney was knocked down thrice, losing a majority decision after Garcia was a +650 underdog who faced public scrutiny leading up to the fight. Following the fight, the result was altered due to a failed drug test by Garcia, yet the image of Haney’s struggle remains ingrained.
A rematch with Garcia could be on the horizon if both fighters secure wins this Friday, supported by a video trailer released prior to the event.
Haney is regarded as a former undisputed lightweight champion and maintains an undefeated record, attributed in part to the overturned Garcia outcome. He has, unfortunately, not earned a victory since December 2023 and has been inactive since his last bout.
“Whether you boo or cheer, it doesn’t affect me. Once I defeat Jose Ramirez, I’m moving straight for Ryan,” Haney stated at the concluding press conference. “Talk is done. I just need to take care of Ramirez first, and then the world will know who’s next.”
Ramirez, who ascends to welterweight for the first time, initially lost his WBC and WBO titles in a 2021 bout against Josh Taylor but rebounded with three consecutive victories until succumbing to Arnold Barboza Jr. last time out.
A Ramirez win could derail huge plans for a Garcia vs. Haney rematch but can also set Ramirez up for a title shot in the welterweight division.
“Everything I’ve overcome has prepared me for this. May 2 will conclude successfully for me. He is a skilled fighter, but I will beat Devin Haney and embark on my next chapter,” Ramirez maintains.
This event is not to be missed, with anticipation building around the fight card, also featuring Teofimo Lopez against Arnold Barboza, promising an engaging night for boxing fans.
