Every Horse in the 2025 Kentucky Derby Descends from Legendary Horse Secretariat
A lineage analysis reveals that all participants in this year's Kentucky Derby share ancestry with Secretariat, considered the greatest racehorse in history.
All 19 competitors in the 151st Kentucky Derby this Saturday have bloodlines tracing back to the legendary Secretariat, considered one of the greatest racehorses ever. According to a report by the Louisville Courier Journal, each horse’s pedigree reveals a connection to Secretariat, who set the record for the fastest Derby time in 1973 while claiming the Triple Crown.
Secretariat produced over 660 registered foals during his lifetime, and many of his offspring are evident in the ancestry of this year’s Derby horses. Most contemporary racehorses feature great ancestors in their lineage, but uniquely, every horse this year can trace their lineage directly to Secretariat through connections like Weekend Surprise, A.P. Indy, Terlingua, Storm Cat, and others.
The horses in this Derby are fourth to seventh descendants of Secretariat, whose last offspring were born in 1990.
“It’s one of those stats,” noted Whit Beckman, trainer for Racing’s Flying Mohawk. “It’s bound to happen at some point with how much he shows up in every single pedigree. It’s really cool. Very cool.”
Notable sires among Secretariat’s ancestors include Risen Star, who triumphed in the 1988 Preakness and Belmont Stakes, and Lady’s Secret, who earned Horse of the Year honors in 1986.
