In a match between two teams already heading back to the Championship, it can be tough for the players, but Leicester City legend Jamie Vardy made his mark at the King Power Stadium during their 2-0 victory over Southampton FC. Vardy, in his last season with the club, scored a goal and played a crucial role in assisting referee David Webb.
In the 22nd minute, Webb was injured after a collision with Leicester’s Jordan Ayew. With the referee lying on the ground, visibly in pain, concerned players quickly surrounded him, but it was Vardy who took the initiative by grabbing Webb’s whistle and blowing it to stop the match. Given the game’s ethos, which mandates play continuation until the whistle, Vardy halted the proceedings since the referee was unable to do so himself. After a stoppage of nearly 12 minutes, Webb managed to leave the field on his own and was replaced by Phil Sharp.

Leicester’s manager, Ruud van Nistelrooy, commented post-game, “I felt sorry for the ref. He hit a brick wall called Jordan Ayew. That is not easy, and Jamie Vardy blew his whistle to stop the game, so we helped him out there.”
At 38, Vardy’s future remains unclear as he leads Leicester in their impending Championship return. Upcoming is his final home match against Ipswich Town on May 18, offering one last chance to bid farewell on a high note.
