The NHL team based in Salt Lake City has officially named itself the Utah Mammoth. Owners Ryan and Ashley Smith announced the permanent name recently, concluding a year-long process that involved feedback from local fans.
“From Day 1, we committed that this team would be built with and for the people of Utah, and we are excited to celebrate today’s launch with the entire state,” they stated when revealing the name. *Translation: " Desde el primer día, nos comprometimos a que este equipo se construiría con y para la gente de Utah, y estamos emocionados de celebrar el lanzamiento de hoy con todo el estado."
The team transitions from the temporary name Utah Hockey Club, which had been used during its inaugural season. Other suggested names included Yeti, which was discarded due to a copyright dispute, and Wasatch, which was quickly changed to Outlaws.
The logo and color palette of the Utah Mammoth integrate elements that reflect the state’s mountainous landscape. The Mammoth keeps its original colors of black, light blue, and white, along with the familiar jerseys that feature ‘UTAH’ prominently across the chest. The team plans to adopt the rallying phrase “Tusks Up”.
As the summer approaches, the Mammoth holds the fourth pick in the draft, is instigating arena renovations, and has over $20 million available in salary cap space, which will enable General Manager Bill Armstrong to enhance the team through trades and free agency. With emerging stars like players Clayton Keller, Logan Cooley, Mikhail Sergachev, and Karel Vejmelka, there is optimism that the team may qualify for the playoffs in their upcoming season.
The rebranding follows {the Smith Entertainment Group’s acquisition of the soon-to-be former Arizona Coyotes, which had been relocated from Winnipeg in 1996.
