Spurs Need to Control Victor Wembanyama After Encounter with Ivica Zubac

San Antonio Spurs player Victor Wembanyama expresses frustration following physical encounters during a game against the LA Clippers.

Victor Wembanyama has reached his limit. The San Antonio standout pursued Ivica Zubac after the center from Los Angeles pushed him down during the Clippers’ victory, which ended at 128-116.

Wembanyama’s frustration stemmed from feeling disrespected by officials in late-game situations. “It’s not even about Zubac; it’s just frustration, no matter who it was,” said Wembanyama.

When questioned about receiving fair treatment from officials, he simply answered, “No.”

Zubac’s shove was one of the many instances of physical play that Wembanyama has faced. Earlier in the quarter, Zubac contested a foul against Harrison Barnes after Barnes blocked his shot. Tensions boiled when Wembanyama blocked Zubac’s dunk attempt, resulting in no foul being called.

After being shoved by Zubac, Wembanyama attempted to retaliate but was restrained by his coaching team and players when they rushed to the court after Zubac’s actions.

Zubac explained his actions, stating, “I reacted a little. I was mad at the refs. I let emotions take over a little bit, but I apologized to him. That’s not how I want to compete.”

Zubac finished the game with 21 points and 22 rebounds, while Wembanyama scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Despite the physicality, no fouls were called against Zubac, nor against Wembanyama, leaving the Spurs’ team infuriated.

Mitch Johnson remarked on the situation, highlighting, “Reactions like that are expected given the contact he endures, and it’s crucial to protect himself if officials aren’t doing that.”

Wembanyama acknowledged the persistent physicality he encounters, stating, “It’s tough to fight back against it, as it often feels unfair. But we discuss it with the staff and know there’s work to do.”
