Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani is set to advance toward his return to the pitching mound. He will participate in live batting practice at Citi Field on Sunday, marking the first time he will face hitters since the end of the 2023 season. Although he was scheduled to throw earlier, that session was postponed due to a rain delay and extra innings in the previous game, as explained by manager Dave Roberts.
Roberts noted that the “realistic expectation is after the break” for Ohtani’s return to the rotation, indicating a possibility for a return in early July post-All-Star Game. This cautious approach comes after Ohtani underwent off-season surgery on his shoulder and is currently recovering from major elbow surgery, further emphasizing the need for his complete health before returning to pitching duties.
Last Saturday, Ohtani completed a 35-pitch bullpen session, showcasing progress in his rehabilitation. The two-way player, noted for his exceptional performance as a designated hitter, did not pitch last year while recuperating but maintained an impressive batting average, contributing to his accolade as the National League MVP. Currently, Ohtani continues to excel offensively in the 2025 season as well.
The Dodgers have struggled with injuries to their rotation early this season. Ohtani’s return is eagerly anticipated as the Dodgers aim for success, currently holding a record of 32-19 and leading the NL West.
