Despite being honored as team captain in his initial three seasons with the Miami Dolphins, Tyreek Hill believes he shouldn’t automatically retain that title for the fourth year. The eight-time Pro Bowl wide receiver stated that he isn’t concerned with being named captain; instead, he aims to prove his value to the team.
“I’ve got to prove myself,” Hill noted. “This OTAs, training camp, I’ve got to prove myself. I’ve got to show up differently. The mindset has got to be different. I don’t feel like I deserve it, and if I didn’t get it, I wouldn’t dwell on it. I wouldn’t sweat it because I put myself in that position.”
Playing through injuries last season, Hill notably missed the playoffs for the first time in his career. He previously mentioned he was “out” after the Dolphins’ Week 18 loss against the New York Jets, only to later clarify his stance.
Hill underwent two wrist surgeries during the offseason for a ligament issue that was previously described by coach Mike McDaniel. After resisting surgery initially, Hill played through pain in all 17 games last season, concluding with 959 receiving yards and six touchdowns, falling short of reaching the 1,000 yards milestone for the first time since 2019.
The prospect of Hill not being with the Dolphins when it comes time for team captain votes lingered as he is on CBS Sports’ list of top trade candidates this offseason. Trading Hill post-June 1 would allow Miami to save almost $15 million.
