Chip Kelly Praises Geno Smith, Calling Him Like a Second Coach for the Raiders
Geno Smith makes a strong impression on the Las Vegas Raiders' new offensive coordinator, Chip Kelly, with his football knowledge and insights.
The Las Vegas Raiders have welcomed Geno Smith from the Seattle Seahawks with hopes that he will lead them into a fresh chapter. However, they have also gained an additional resource on their coaching staff.
During their ongoing OTAs, Smith has already made a significant impact on his new offensive coordinator, Chip Kelly. As Kelly gets to know Smith, he notes that the quarterback provides insights akin to that of an assistant coach.
“He’s great,” Kelly stated, as reported by ESPN. “Geno is literally like a second coach. When you’re in that room with him and quarterbacks coach Greg Olson, there are lots of ideas being shared. His football acumen is really off the charts, and it’s impressive to be around him.”
With a wealth of experience spanning 11 seasons in the NFL, Smith has had a colorful journey since being selected as the No. 39 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. While his early years with the New York Jets weren’t ideal, he found renewed success with the Seahawks, earning Pro Bowl selections in his last two seasons.
Over 54 games with Seattle, he maintained a completion rate of 68.5%, amassing 12,961 yards, 76 touchdowns, and 36 interceptions, alongside five rushing touchdowns.
The Raiders are banking on Smith’s extensive experience and skills to help them bounce back after a disappointing 4-13 season in 2024.
