Texas Tech Shocks Oklahoma, Ending Their Dominant Streak at the Women's College World Series

Texas Tech delivers a stunning upset against Oklahoma, marking a significant shift in the Women's College World Series.

Oklahoma’s quest for a fifth consecutive Women’s College World Series title ended in a thrilling 3-2 loss to Texas Tech. The Red Raiders achieved victory with a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh, marking Oklahoma’s second defeat in this tournament and thwarting their hopes for a comeback.

Texas Tech’s standout pitcher, NiJaree Canady, helped the team snap a stunning 37-game losing streak against the Sooners, securing a place in the championship series against Texas. This moment is historic as TTU becomes the first program in World Series history to reach the championship in its inaugural appearance at Oklahoma City, mirroring the Sooners’ own debut back in 2000.

Canady delivered six scoreless innings before the Sooners, facing elimination, rallied with a two-run home run from Abigale Dayton to tie the game. However, the Red Raiders quickly regained their footing in the bottom of the seventh inning with clutch hits from Mihyia Davis and Hailey Toney, allowing Lauren Allred to score the winning run with a sacrifice fly.

Canady, who has transferred from Stanford, dominated the game with eight strikeouts, remaining undefeated at the Women’s College World Series. The upcoming championship series pits Texas Tech against Texas for the chance to claim their first national title, as the Longhorns aim to secure a win after two previous losses to Oklahoma in 2022 and 2024.

Game 1 of the best-of-three series is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday at OGE Energy Field at Devon Park.
