Travis Hunter Shines on Defense as Jaguars Coach Requests More Practice Time

Travis Hunter, the Jacksonville Jaguars' second overall draft pick, demonstrates exceptional defensive skills, prompting coaching staff to seek additional practice time with him as he juggles two positions.

Travis Hunter left an indelible mark on the Jacksonville Jaguars coaching staff during OTA practices by showcasing his defensive capabilities. The talented player, who rose to prominence at Colorado, expressed his ambition to play both wide receiver and cornerback during the draft. Jaguars coach Liam Coen noted that secondary coach Ron Milus has already requested more practice time with Hunter, emphasizing the need for extended development at both positions.

Originally concentrating on offensive drills during rookie minicamp, Hunter made his foray into the defensive backfield for OTAs, following the plan laid out by Coen upon his arrival in Jacksonville. Coen remarked, “Milo came up to me after practice and said, ‘Can we have him more?’ That’s a good thing, right?”

Hunter, who earned the 2024 Heisman Trophy, excelled in both roles at Colorado, effortlessly playing over 100 snaps per game. While adamant about maintaining a dual role in the NFL, he expressed cautious optimism about managing the transition to a professional workload. “To be honest, I think I just need to see if my body will allow me to take all of this and continue to take all this,” Hunter stated. “But I do a lot of treatment, so I’m able to keep up with my body and with what I need for my body.”

Proudly drafted as the second overall pick, Hunter’s college career concluded with impressive statistics, including 1,258 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns alongside 36 tackles and four interceptions.
